Trump Launches America.gov, an AI Chatbot Portal for Federal Services

President Donald Trump introduced a new government website on Tuesday called America.gov, describing it as a single digital gateway meant to make it easier for Americans to find federal information and services. The launch event in Washington was attended by several Cabinet officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, underscoring the administration's desire to present the project as a cross-agency priority.

At its core, the site behaves less like a traditional government webpage and more like a conversational assistant. According to the source material, it operates in a manner comparable to well-known AI chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude, responding to plain-language questions and directing users to the appropriate official government sources. A question about renewing a passport, for instance, would be met with guidance pointing to the relevant agency rather than requiring the user to hunt through multiple departmental sites.

The president signed an executive order establishing the site on Tuesday, formalizing its creation and framing its purpose in broad terms. The order describes America.gov as "a unified digital front door to the Federal Government" for anyone in the United States seeking federal information or services. It further states that the site should offer a way for individuals to sign in, communicate in everyday language, receive accurate answers, and, where authorized and technically feasible, complete government transactions without having to navigate the websites of several different agencies.

The technology behind the portal draws on two major private-sector AI systems. Joe Gebbia, the chief design officer, said the site is powered by Google's Gemini AI and xAI's Grok. The involvement of these external platforms highlights how the administration is leaning on commercial artificial intelligence infrastructure rather than building a bespoke system from scratch, a choice that may raise questions about data handling, vendor reliance, and long-term costs.

Privacy was a central theme of the president's remarks. In his speech, Trump claimed the website would not store user information. White House officials elaborated to Al Jazeera that the site will follow the security protocols of whichever government agency a user is asking about. Any information submitted, they said, would be retained by that agency rather than by America.gov itself — citing Medicare as an example of how retention would work in practice.

The administration has also positioned the site as a tool for civic and immigration-related tasks. During the announcement, the president highlighted simplified access to information about elections and applications for citizenship, presenting the portal as a way to reduce friction for people trying to interact with federal institutions. The executive order likewise emphasizes completing transactions where legally and technically possible, suggesting the site could eventually handle more than just questions and referrals.

The project was developed in coordination with the National Design Studio, an entity within the Executive Office of the President that Trump established in August 2025. That arrangement places the website's design and development close to the White House, rather than within an existing agency such as the General Services Administration, which has historically overseen federal digital services.

To gauge how the chatbot handles politically sensitive subjects, Al Jazeera tested its responses. When asked "who is the fake news?", the site declined to engage, saying it does not label news outlets or comment on media. Asked who won the 2020 presidential election, it answered Joe Biden — a response at odds with Trump's repeated false claims about that contest. Asked whether the department led by Pete Hegseth is the Department of Defense or the Department of War, it replied that the name remains "Department of Defense (DoD)" in statute until Congress changes it.

The site also appears designed to route requests for sensitive personal records elsewhere rather than answering them directly. When questioned about obtaining individual tax information, citizenship records, political donations, or Securities and Exchange Commission filings, it directed users to the government websites that provide that data for individuals. That approach keeps America.gov in the role of a navigator rather than a repository for private information.

Looking ahead, officials signaled that the site's capabilities could expand significantly. During the presentation, Rubio demonstrated that in the future the website may allow Americans to apply for passports directly through the portal, and even to take and upload their passport photos. Such a step would move America.gov from an information concierge toward a transactional platform, a shift that would require robust identity verification and security safeguards.

The launch reflects a broader pattern of the Trump administration experimenting with AI in government and centralizing digital services under White House direction. Proponents argue that a single, conversational entry point could save citizens time and reduce confusion, particularly for people who struggle to navigate the fragmented landscape of federal agency websites. Critics are likely to focus on privacy guarantees, the use of private AI models, and the potential for politically charged answers.

For now, America.gov functions primarily as a chatbot that points people to official sources. Its long-term success will depend on whether agencies actually integrate their services, whether the privacy commitments hold up under scrutiny, and whether users trust an AI intermediary to handle questions about benefits, records, and citizenship. The administration has framed the project as a simplification; how it performs in practice will determine whether that framing holds.
