India and Pakistan Drawn Together for 2027 World Cup as ICC Unveils Landmark Schedule

Cricket's fiercest rivalry will resume on the sport's biggest stage in 2027, after the International Cricket Council confirmed that India and Pakistan have been placed in the same group for the next 50-over World Cup, with their group-stage showdown set for October 10, 2027 at Johannesburg.

The fixture between the two South Asian neighbours has long been regarded as the most lucrative and emotionally charged match in world cricket, routinely drawing record television audiences and filling stadiums wherever it is staged. Its return to the global tournament will once again dominate the sporting calendar, with organisers expected to reap a significant commercial windfall from the occasion.

The ICC released the full schedule on Thursday, revealing that 12 teams will compete across three host nations: South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. A total of 12 venues will stage matches during the tournament.

Johannesburg will not only host the group-stage clash between India and Pakistan but will also stage the final on November 21, 2027, cementing the city's status as the centrepiece of the competition. The two rivals could meet again in the Super Seven stage, and potentially a third time in the final, should both teams progress that far.

India have been placed in Group A alongside Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and one yet-to-be-determined qualifier. Group B comprises New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, England, Bangladesh and a second qualifier.

The tournament will open in Cape Town on October 7, 2027, when defending champions Australia face India in a rematch of the 2023 World Cup final. Newlands, the Cape Town venue famous for its dramatic mountain backdrop, will also host the first semifinal on November 17, 2027, while the second semifinal takes place the following day at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

The scheduling of the India-Pakistan group match was not left to chance. The ICC confirmed that the two teams were drawn into the same group through a ballot conducted behind closed doors, a practice unique to cricket among major global sporting events. The arrangement guarantees the sport's most commercially valuable group-stage fixture, a decision that reflects the enormous financial stakes involved.

The two qualifying nations will be determined through a 10-team tournament scheduled for early next year. The winner of that event will secure direct entry to the group stage, while the losing finalist and the two beaten semifinalists will contest a Super Series in Namibia, with the victor claiming the second qualifying berth.

Zimbabwe, co-hosting the tournament, will begin their campaign on October 11, 2027 against Afghanistan in Bulawayo. England will play two of their group matches in Namibia, while a newly constructed ground at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe will host the co-hosts' final group fixture against India on October 24, 2027. That venue will also stage three additional matches during the Super Seven phase.

The ICC confirmed that the top 10 teams in its rankings as of Tuesday have earned automatic qualification for the tournament, removing any uncertainty over the participation of the sport's leading nations.

Under the competition format, the top three teams from each group advance to the Super Seven stage, along with the best fourth-placed side across the two groups. To give fans, teams and stakeholders greater clarity, the ICC has pre-seeded a number of teams into designated positions in the Super Seven stage regardless of where they finish in the group phase.

ICC chairman Jay Shah welcomed the announcement, describing the three host nations as offering an exceptional setting for the event. He said South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia would provide an unforgettable stage for the world's best teams, citing the region's deep passion for cricket, its extraordinary destinations and its renowned hospitality.

After the Super Seven phase concludes, the top four teams will advance to the semifinals. The leading side will face the fourth-placed team, while the second and third-placed nations will meet in the other last-four encounter, setting up a climax that organisers hope will capture global attention.

For India and Pakistan, the tournament represents another chapter in a rivalry that transcends sport, shaped by decades of political tension that have limited their meetings largely to international tournaments. Every encounter between the two sides carries enormous emotional weight, and the prospect of up to three meetings in a single World Cup will only intensify anticipation among fans across the subcontinent and beyond.

The 2027 edition will be the fourth consecutive 50-over World Cup, continuing a format that remains the sport's flagship event despite the rising popularity of T20 cricket. With the schedule now confirmed, attention will shift to the qualifying tournament and the battle for the two remaining places in what promises to be a fiercely contested global showpiece.
