White House Disclosures Reveal Trump Awarded Tens of Thousands in Holiday Cash Gifts to Aides

United States President Donald Trump distributed tens of thousands of dollars in direct holiday cash gifts to several high-level White House staffers last year, according to newly released administration financial records. The substantial cash payments have ignited debate over potential conflicts with federal ethics regulations governing compensation for government workers.

The executive disclosures, made public last week, reveal that executive assistant Natalie Harp, communications adviser Margo Martin, and deputy director of Oval Office operations Chamberlain Harris each received cash amounts of $45,000. Meanwhile, Walt Nauta, who serves as the director of Oval Office operations, was given a $20,000 cash payment.

All four monetary disbursements were formally categorized on the disclosure filings under the description of "Cash Gift for Holidays." The magnitude of the payments represents a substantial fraction of the aides' public compensation, with the $45,000 sums amounting to roughly one-third of the $150,000 annual government salaries received by Harp, Martin, and Harris. Nauta receives an annual government salary of $175,000.

Under longstanding federal ethics frameworks, civil servants and appointed personnel are broadly barred from accepting supplemental compensation, outside income, or personal remuneration that extends beyond their established government salaries. The emergence of the holiday payments has consequently spurred scrutiny over whether such substantial personal gifts comply with statutory standards.

In response to the filings, the White House maintained that the cash gifts were fully permissible and did not violate existing ethical guidelines. White House spokesperson Davis Ingle insisted that the financial transfers should not be viewed as compensation tied to the administration's official business or public policy actions.

Ingle emphasized that the money provided to the four aides was completely disconnected from their assigned executive responsibilities. According to the spokesperson, the gifts were entirely permissible under all relevant legal frameworks and ethical requirements.

The administration further justified the payments by pointing to Trump’s personal habits, noting that he maintains a well-established custom of giving seasonal monetary gifts to individuals within his inner personal and professional network. Spokesperson Ingle explained that this practice has been routinely observed throughout both Trump’s private business career and his periods in public office.

The individuals named in the filings, particularly Harp and Nauta, constitute some of the president’s most trusted and consistent companions in the executive branch. Both aides maintain nearly continuous daily access to Trump within the West Wing and regularly accompany him across domestic and international travels.

Harp has developed a particularly visible and specialized role in Trump's daily communications apparatus. According to a source familiar with her day-to-day duties, she assists with running Trump's Truth Social account and frequently drafts text for his social media releases.

In addition to her digital portfolio, Harp has gained widespread attention for carrying a portable printing device during public appearances to furnish the president with immediate physical copies of breaking news articles. Her constant presence with the hardware has led observers to refer to her as Trump's "human printer."

Her prominent position and close association with the president have also made her a target for political adversaries. During a campaign rally for the midterm elections, Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff publicly questioned Trump’s dedication to his presidential duties, pointing specifically to his frequent travels alongside Harp and arguing that the president favored personal travel over governance.

Nauta similarly shares an exceptionally close bond with Trump that predates the current administration. Originally serving as a White House valet, Nauta remained in Trump's personal employ following his departure from office in 2020, taking on responsibilities at the Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and with Trump's political action committee before returning to the executive branch for his second term.

During the interim between presidential terms, Nauta became a central figure in a high-profile legal battle when he was named as a co-defendant alongside Trump in a federal criminal indictment regarding the handling of classified documents. Prosecutors accused Nauta of conspiring to conceal government records and obstructing a federal inquiry; he pleaded not guilty to all charges, and the indictment was subsequently dismissed after Trump regained the presidency.

The deep trust placed in both Harp and Nauta was demonstrated during a sensitive security episode in July during presidential travel through Turkiye. Amid reports of emerging safety threats, Trump, accompanied by Harp, Nauta, and a small entourage of aides, was secretly transferred into a catering vehicle on the tarmac to switch airplanes out of public view.

Other high-ranking government officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, along with White House press personnel and regular staff, remained aboard the primary presidential aircraft. Critics later labeled that original plane an unwitting decoy that faced elevated risk while the inner circle relocated, highlighting the tight perimeter surrounding Trump and his closest confidants.
