Supporting Acts Abandon Ed Sheeran’s US Tour Following Macklemore’s Ouster Over Palestine Stance

English pop star Ed Sheeran is facing a sweeping boycott of his upcoming North American tour, as every scheduled supporting act has pulled out of the lineup. The mass departure comes in direct response to the controversial removal of American rapper Macklemore, who was dropped from the tour following his onstage advocacy for Palestinian rights.

The wave of cancellations threatens to cast a shadow over Sheeran’s US Loop Tour just days before its official kickoff. The concert series is scheduled to begin on September 19 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, yet the British headliner now finds himself without any opening performers across his stadium dates.

The turmoil began earlier this month during a performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where Macklemore, whose real name is Ben Haggerty, delivered an impassioned speech to the audience. The rapper told the crowd that people across Gaza and the occupied West Bank were not forgotten, before shouting "Free Palestine" alongside calls to free Lebanon, Cuba, the Congo, Sudan, and Iran.

In addition to his remarks, Macklemore performed his track "Hind’s Hall." The song honors Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl killed by Israeli forces while trapped inside a vehicle in Gaza, and takes its name from Hamilton Hall at Columbia University, which was occupied and renamed by student protesters during demonstrations against the Gaza war in 2024.

Macklemore's appearance sparked intense backlash from advocacy groups, leading the Israeli-American Council to launch a petition demanding his expulsion from the concert series. Defending his public stance, the rapper insisted that advocating for equal treatment for all human beings should never be considered controversial.

Corporate and venue pushback quickly escalated, centering around billionaire Robert Kraft, who owns Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Macklemore later revealed on social media that Sheeran personally informed him that Kraft had barred him from performing at the Foxborough venue and had actively encouraged other stadium owners to take the same measure.

Addressing the growing controversy on Tuesday, Sheeran attempted to distance himself from the decision to expel the rapper, placing the responsibility on the tour's American promoter. The pop star stated that the promoter's decision stemmed from how Macklemore delivered his message rather than the full substance of what was said, adding that he had spent the week attempting to mediate with venue operators to resolve the issue.

Rather than calming tensions, Sheeran's explanation triggered a coordinated walkout by his remaining musical guests. American singer-songwriter Finneas was among the first to announce his departure on Instagram, declaring that artists must never be silenced when using their platform to speak on behalf of oppressed populations and reaffirming his solidarity with Palestine.

Finneas, who shares Irish family roots with his sister Billie Eilish and has previously voiced support for the Palestinian cause, was joined in the boycott by Irish singer Aaron Rowe. Rowe had previously supported Sheeran during the tour's Australian leg earlier this year and was slated to perform across ten US dates.

In a public statement, Rowe described the choice to step down as deeply painful given his personal friendship with Sheeran, whom he credited with changing his life. However, he emphasized that his Irish heritage made it impossible to overlook experiences of violent occupation, forced famine, and genocide, stating he could not allow wealthy stadium owners to suppress voices speaking out against the killing of children.

The walkout also extended into Sheeran's immediate musical circle, as his long-standing backing band Beoga announced their departure from the North American leg. The traditional Irish ensemble has shared a close professional and personal bond with Sheeran spanning more than a decade.

Despite acknowledging the rare opportunity of performing in massive American stadiums, Beoga stated on social media that they refused to participate following what they described as the silencing of Macklemore by pro-Israel lobbies. The band reiterated their commitment to dialogue as the rightful vehicle for advancing the rights of the Palestinian people.

The collective boycott was further solidified by Danish pop band Lukas Graham, whose lead vocalist Lukas Forchhammer issued a statement criticizing the silencing of discussions surrounding civilian suffering. Forchhammer expressed the heartbreak of witnessing families mourn lost loved ones and defended the fundamental right of artists to speak about war and the safety of children regardless of nationality.

Forchhammer also condemned the disproportionate influence of wealth on free expression, asserting that a person's bank balance should not dictate who is permitted to speak or which human tragedies the public is allowed to recognize.

With all supporting acts united in their refusal to take the stage, Sheeran faces a deeply fractured US tour. The controversy underscores growing tensions across the live entertainment industry, where political expression concerning Israel and Palestine continues to collide with venue management, corporate power, and international artist solidarity.
