Poland Warns of Potential Russian Hybrid Strikes on Western Allies Supporting Ukraine

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has warned that intelligence reports point to Russian preparations for hybrid drone and missile attacks directed at Western nations assisting Ukraine. Addressing lawmakers in Warsaw, the Polish leader cautioned that Moscow could target allied territory, including Poland itself, in an attempt to disrupt and weaken the international coalition standing behind Kyiv.

According to Tusk, the strategic objective of such operations would be to fracture NATO’s collective decision-making process. By creating uncertainty, the strikes would be intended to sow hesitation among member states and test their willingness to invoke the military alliance’s collective defense mechanisms in the event of an attack on allied soil.

The Polish prime minister explained that Moscow’s potential strikes are anticipated to be framed as ostensible accidents rather than outright declarations of war. This calculated ambiguity would aim to paralyze or diminish the resolve of NATO member nations when deciding whether to activate mutual defense commitments following an incursion against a member state.

While delivering his assessment during a parliamentary session, Tusk did not disclose the specific intelligence services that compiled the findings. His remarks come amid heightened vigilance across Europe regarding unconventional warfare tactics aimed at destabilizing countries that provide military and financial aid to Kyiv.

Tusk also warned of a potential overlap between these military maneuvers and shifting political dynamics across Europe. He cautioned that Russian aggression could be timed alongside the rise of political factions across the continent that promote pacifist messaging and highlight casualties to demand an end to hostilities, rhetoric he described as effectively pushing for the total capitulation of Ukraine.

These comments appeared to refer to the growing domestic influence of political groups such as the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and France’s National Rally, both of which have expressed skepticism toward ongoing military assistance to Ukraine and have advocated for alternative approaches toward Moscow.

The warnings emerge against the backdrop of wider European concerns over suspected Russian sabotage. Governments across the continent have pointed to a sequence of suspicious disruptions in recent months aimed at exerting pressure on Kyiv's partners, with a notable focus on Germany, though Kremlin officials have consistently and vigorously denied any involvement in such operations.

Direct security concerns along Poland's eastern border have escalated simultaneously. Earlier on Thursday, the Polish armed forces were compelled to scramble military aircraft after Russian forces launched strikes across western Ukraine, dangerously close to the Polish frontier.

The cross-border alert triggered immediate disruption to Polish civilian infrastructure. Aviation authorities temporarily halted flights and closed airports in the eastern cities of Rzeszow and Lublin to ensure airspace security while military jets carried out precautionary patrols.

Residents across two eastern Polish regions were placed on high alert as warning sirens sounded throughout several communities. Local reports confirmed that precautionary civil defense measures were enacted, with pupils in several schools directed to emergency shelters during the active alert window.

Tusk specified that one of the Russian strikes in western Ukraine appeared to target civilian infrastructure near the border town of Dorohusk, noting that a petrol station was most likely struck during the morning bombardment.

The incident follows another close-range strike earlier in the week, when a Russian drone targeted a passenger train operating in western Ukraine just two kilometers (1.6 miles) from the Polish frontier, further fueling concerns regarding the proximity of Russian strikes to NATO borders.

In response to the escalating aerial activity near the frontier, Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that the military is actively strengthening the protection of its national airspace. Polish defense units have raised their operational readiness, mobilizing additional assets along the eastern flank.

Kosiniak-Kamysz announced on social media platform X that Poland has expanded patrol flights involving F-16 fighter aircraft and military helicopters, while simultaneously reinforcing its ground-based air defense and rapid-reaction units.

In a bid to address long-term air defense requirements, Tusk stated that he would travel to Ukraine for a bilateral meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The discussions will center on expanding cooperation within the Integrated Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition.

This European defense partnership aims to collaborate directly with Ukraine to develop unified air defense systems designed to offer a more economical and sustainable alternative to costly United States-manufactured Patriot air defense batteries.
