Ollie Robinson Puts England on Brink of 3-0 Series Whitewash Over Pakistan at Edgbaston

England moved within touching distance of completing a commanding 3-0 series whitewash against Pakistan on Thursday, as Ollie Robinson delivered another masterclass with both bat and ball on the second day of the third Test at Edgbaston. Robinson struck twice in his very first over of Pakistan’s second innings to dismantle the visitors' top order, further cementing the hosts' unassailable control over the contest.

When persistent rainfall brought a premature end to proceedings in Birmingham, the struggling touring side had limped to 52 for two. Faced with a monumental task, Pakistan still require an additional 268 runs simply to wipe out their deficit and force England to bat for a second time, leaving their chances of salvaging pride in the series hanging by a thread.

Robinson, who has arguably been the definitive performer of the English summer after claiming player of the match honors in both previous Tests, wasted no time asserting his authority with the new ball. On the opening delivery of Pakistan's reply, the 32-year-old seamer sent Saim Ayub packing, condemning the opening batsman to a miserable pair of ducks in the match.

Just three balls later, Robinson struck again to dismiss Abdullah Shafique, leaving the tourists in complete disarray at the start of their innings. The Sussex paceman concluded an extraordinary opening spell with figures of two wickets for just 10 runs across his six overs, illustrating the relentless precision that has tormented the Pakistani lineup throughout the tour.

Across the three-match series, Robinson has proven almost impossible to counter, amassing 21 wickets at an astonishing bowling average of under seven runs apiece. His sustained accuracy and movement have completely unpicked the visiting batting unit across multiple conditions and match situations.

Pakistan batting coach Mike Smith offered high praise for the English bowler following the day's play, acknowledging the immense technical and mental challenge Robinson poses to his charges. Smith described Robinson as one of the game's most reliable and disciplined performers, pointing out that his ability to wear batters down during an extended purple patch requires a strategic response that Pakistan has so far struggled to deliver.

Pakistan's hopes of mounting any sustained resistance now rest largely on the shoulders of captain Shan Masood and opening batsman Azan Awais. Masood survived a significant scare when he was put down in the slips by Ben Duckett off the bowling of Gus Atkinson, battling through to reach 21 not out alongside Awais, who remained unbeaten on 29 when the rain arrived.

Earlier in the day, England had resumed their first innings with a modest 23-run overnight lead before unleashing a devastating burst of attacking strokeplay. The home side piled on runs rapidly to reach a formidable total of 453, establishing a massive 320-run first-innings advantage that effectively put the match beyond Pakistan's grasp.

Central to England's commanding total was a dynamic fifth-wicket partnership between Harry Brook and Dan Lawrence, who combined to add 86 runs at a brisk tempo. The stand was broken in dramatic fashion when Brook, having struck a fluent 75 from 97 deliveries, misjudged a sharp single and was run out by a direct piece of fielding from Masood.

Lawrence continued his impressive return to the Test arena following a two-year absence from the international team, compiling 65 off 82 balls to notch his third consecutive half-century of the series. His entertaining stay was ended when he dragged a wide delivery onto his own stumps, providing Pakistani bowler Mohammad Imran with his maiden Test wicket.

Reflecting on his personal contribution after the day's play, Lawrence expressed satisfaction with his current form and the rhythm he established alongside Brook. While acknowledging that he had hoped to convert his start into a substantial three-figure score, the middle-order batsman noted that securing 65 runs represented a valuable return that he gladly would have accepted before walking out to the middle.

England's batting depth was underlined further by an encouraging performance from Jamie Smith, who battled through both recent poor form and a painful finger injury to score a vital 69 from 84 deliveries. Smith's innings, which featured nine boundaries and a six, marked his most prolific Test effort since registering an 88-run knock against India at the same venue 14 months prior.

Because of the finger problem sustained during his batting heroics, Smith was unable to take his usual place behind the stumps for Pakistan's second innings, leading England to hand the wicketkeeping gloves over to Jordan Cox. Before Robinson wreaked havoc with the ball, he also made a splash with the willow, smashing a breezy 50 that included a colossal six off Mohammad Abbas soaring into Edgbaston's famed Hollies Stand.

Robinson's counterattacking innings was eventually halted by 21-year-old fast bowler Razaullah, who claimed the all-rounder as his fourth victim of the innings. Despite having only eight first-class appearances to his credit prior to earning his international debut, Razaullah displayed encouraging raw pace and aggression throughout his 23 overs, even though his attacking style came at the heavy expense of 148 runs.

While Razaullah's raw potential offers a faint silver lining for the future, the immediate outlook remains desperately bleak for the tourists. Having suffered defeats in 15 of their previous 20 Test fixtures, Pakistan face an uphill struggle to avoid a comprehensive 3-0 series sweep when play resumes on the third morning in Birmingham.
