Nairobi Selected as First African Host for World Athletics Championships in 2029

Nairobi has been selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, securing a historic milestone as the first African city to stage track and field's premier global competition. The landmark decision ensures that the continent, long celebrated for producing some of the world's most dominant distance runners, will finally welcome the prestigious event on home soil.

The announcement was delivered by World Athletics following a high-level council meeting held on Tuesday in Budapest, Hungary. The Kenyan capital successfully fended off fierce competition from three heavyweight European cities: London, Munich, and Rome, all of which submitted strong candidacies during the competitive bidding process.

Although Munich fell short in its push to stage the 2029 competition, the Bavarian capital was not left empty-handed. The governing body of global track and field announced that Munich has been chosen to host the subsequent edition of the championships in 2031, effectively mapping out the sport's international calendar well into the next decade.

The decisions were finalized in Budapest, which has maintained a prominent profile in the athletics world after staging the recently concluded Ultimate Championships. The council meeting served as a crucial forum for establishing the long-term roadmap and global distribution of the federation’s flagship track and field tournaments.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe revealed the complexity of the deliberations during a subsequent news conference, acknowledging the immense quality of the proposals submitted by each candidate city. The British sports administrator pointed out that the federation was fortunate to evaluate four high-caliber presentations, which made the council's final selection a challenging task.

With Beijing already confirmed as the host for the 2027 World Athletics Championships, the selections for 2029 and 2031 will create a broad geographical rotation across three consecutive cycles. Coe emphasized that the sport will successfully traverse Asia, Africa, and Europe over the next three editions, fulfilling an organizational ambition to showcase elite athletics across diverse regions of the globe.

Coe underscored the deep emotional and symbolic weight of taking the competition to African soil for the very first time. He commended the Kenyan delegation for organizing a submission that was not only structurally compelling but also carried immense emotional resonance for the global track and field community.

According to Coe, the decision to award the championships to Africa was guided by the necessity of matching the right host with the right timing and the right operational foundation. He stressed that bringing the event to the continent required a thoroughly prepared city capable of meeting every organizational demand.

The leadership of World Athletics expressed great optimism regarding the broader impact of the Nairobi games. Coe highlighted that the Kenyan capital emphatically proved that this is the ideal moment to energize and supercharge the progress of athletics not only within Kenya itself but across the entire African continent, establishing an enduring legacy that can inspire future generations.

The successful campaign marks a significant redemption for Kenya, which had previously entered the bidding race for the 2025 World Championships but was unsuccessful in that attempt. Rather than deterring sports authorities, that earlier bid provided essential experience that helped the organizing team refine their vision and address critical areas of the application.

A key cornerstone of the triumphant 2029 bid was the presentation of an upgraded infrastructure package, particularly the modernization of Kasarani Stadium. The iconic venue in Nairobi is currently undergoing an extensive overhaul and revitalization in preparation for hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) football tournament, ensuring top-tier sporting facilities will be ready for the athletics showcase.

Coe praised the Kenyan organizers for their responsiveness and adaptability following their previous bid, noting that the delegation took the time to understand and master the rigorous expectations of the evaluation panel. By returning with upgraded venue commitments and a much stronger overall proposition, Nairobi proved its readiness to handle an event of this scale.

The 2029 championships will build upon Kenya's established history of staging major international age-group track and field events. Nairobi has previously hosted both the World Under-18 Championships in 2017 and the World Under-20 Championships in 2021, proving its organizational capabilities and appetite for high-level international athletics.

Kenya's wider hosting pedigree also extends beyond youth tournaments and outside the capital city. The nation previously organized the 2007 World Cross Country Championships in the coastal city of Mombasa, in addition to staging the 2010 African Athletics Championships in Nairobi.

The confirmation of the 2029 World Championships in Nairobi represents a crowning achievement for Kenya's sports landscape, rewarding years of persistence and fulfilling a long-held ambition to bring the world's finest track and field athletes to compete on African ground.
