Israel Imposes Travel Ban on Jeremy Corbyn and Ten British Lawmakers Following UK Settlement Sanctions

The Israeli government has barred British Member of Parliament Jeremy Corbyn and ten of his parliamentary colleagues from entering the country, triggering a strong denunciation from the veteran politician over what he characterizes as an attempt to evade international scrutiny. The travel prohibition comes in direct retaliation against recent measures enacted by the United Kingdom to restrict the importation of products originating from illegal Israeli settlements.

Addressing the travel ban, the independent MP for Islington North and former Labour Party leader asserted that the restriction would not deter him or other international figures from highlighting the ongoing crisis facing Palestinians. Instead, he argued that the prohibition merely offers a small glimpse into the severe systemic controls, movement restrictions, and authoritarian governance that Palestinian populations confront every day under military occupation.

According to Corbyn, the primary objective behind barring elected British officials is to prevent foreign delegations from conducting on-the-ground assessments in both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. He maintained that preventing lawmakers from observing these areas directly is part of a broader, deliberate strategy designed to shield state actions from foreign oversight and conceal potential human rights violations.

The exclusion of foreign parliamentarians aligns with a wider pattern of access denial, the British politician noted, pointing out that Israeli authorities have similarly refused entry to United Nations investigators and independent international journalists. He stated that these systematic entry denials are intended to restrict global reporting on the full scale of war crimes, apartheid policies, and genocide committed against the Palestinian people.

Corbyn highlighted the catastrophic conditions in the Gaza Strip, where an extensive and unlawful blockade has severely restricted the flow of essential goods and basic necessities. He emphasized that these stringent controls over what enters and exits the enclave have driven mass civilian displacement and widespread starvation, compounding the plight of generations of Palestinian refugees who continue to be denied the right of return.

Reflecting on his past visits to the Palestinian territories, the lawmaker described the everyday mechanisms of military rule that govern the West Bank. He detailed the pervasive infrastructure of control, including ubiquitous military checkpoints, manned observation watchtowers, arbitrary detentions, and unchecked violence carried out by Israeli settlers against local communities, characterizing the reality as an apartheid system that strips occupied residents of basic autonomy.

The diplomatic spat follows the British government’s decision to impose targeted trade sanctions on goods produced within illegal Israeli settlements. Corbyn welcomed the move as a long-overdue step, noting that opposition to state-backed settler violence is rapidly mounting across Western nations and that previous inaction had allowed unlawful territorial expansion to proceed with prolonged impunity.

The MP underscored that legal obligations underpinning such measures are firmly established in international law, referencing the landmark July 2024 advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice. The world court ruled that Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territories is unlawful and confirmed that third-party states, including the United Kingdom, are legally obligated to refrain from providing aid, trade, or assistance that helps sustain that occupation.

While viewing the settlement goods ban as a positive initial development, Corbyn argued that the UK’s legal and moral responsibilities extend much further. He contended that because settlement enterprises are deeply integrated into Israel’s broader national economy, narrow restrictions remain insufficient and should be expanded into a comprehensive cessation of all trade and support that sustains the unlawful military occupation.

Beyond economic measures, the lawmaker reiterated his pressing demands for the UK government to formally recognize that a genocide is occurring in Gaza. He called for a complete termination of all bilateral military cooperation, explicitly urging an end to the export of British-made components for F-35 combat aircraft and a halt to military surveillance flights conducted over the territory of Gaza.

Corbyn also pressed for the establishment of a full, independent public inquiry into British complicity regarding the ongoing conflict. He stated that public accountability remains essential for determining the degree to which UK diplomatic, military, and economic policies have facilitated or supported violations of international humanitarian law in the region.

Having participated in numerous solidarity demonstrations across the United Kingdom, Corbyn reiterated his commitment to centering Palestinian experiences in political discourse. He emphasized that public rallies and political speeches must consistently amplify the authentic voices, artistic expressions, and resilience of those living under occupation rather than viewing them solely through the lens of victimhood and devastation.

The British lawmaker concluded that diplomatic bans and intimidation tactics signal growing desperation as international support for Israeli policies erodes across the globe. Insisting that the only viable foundation for lasting peace is the complete end of the occupation, he expressed enduring hope that he will eventually return to visit the region within the borders of a free and sovereign Palestinian state.
