Fernando Alonso Extends Aston Martin Stay Into 2027, Vows He Still Has 'Speed and Determination'

Fernando Alonso has ended months of uncertainty about his Formula One future by committing to Aston Martin for at least one more season, with the team confirming on Tuesday that its driver lineup will remain unchanged for 2027.

The two-time world champion, who turns 46 next July, will therefore continue as the oldest active competitor on the grid, extending a career that began in the sport back in 2001 and has since spanned more than two decades of top-level racing.

Alonso explained that the decision was not one he reached quickly, describing the thought process behind it as deliberate. In a statement released by the team, he said he had taken his time before concluding that racing remains his life and his passion, and that he retains both the speed and the will to compete at the highest level.

The announcement removes the immediate question mark that had been hanging over the Spaniard since the summer, when he publicly admitted he was weighing up his options. At that stage, he indicated he would look at alternative roles within the team should Aston Martin decide his value lay elsewhere, while also keeping open the possibility of pursuing entirely different motorsport challenges.

Among those alternative ambitions he had mentioned were the Dakar Rally and another attempt at the Indianapolis 500, events that would have required him to step away from a full Formula One campaign. His decision to stay put effectively shelves those plans, at least for the near term, and signals that he still sees unfinished business in grand prix racing.

Alonso framed his motivation in terms of enjoyment and ambition rather than age, insisting that the number of years he has accumulated is not the obstacle. What matters to him, he said, is the desire to keep going, the fun the sport provides and the goals that remain unfulfilled — a mindset that has clearly outweighed any temptation to walk away.

He also spoke about his broader commitment to the Silverstone-based outfit, saying he is signed up for the long haul and wants to play a part in making the team successful. Alonso pointed to what he described as strong leadership, impressive personnel, solid partnerships and excellent facilities as reasons for his belief in the project.

The team's ownership has welcomed the continuity. Lawrence Stroll, the Canadian businessman who owns Aston Martin, said fielding two experienced drivers carries considerable worth for an organisation that aspires to fight for championships. He stressed that winning remains the ultimate objective, even if the immediate priority is to lift performance on track.

Stroll acknowledged the current short-term difficulties but argued that the squad possesses the calibre of talent required to meet its longer-term targets. His comments reflect a team that has invested heavily in infrastructure and personnel in recent years, yet has so far been unable to translate that into consistent results at the front of the field.

Alonso will again be partnered by Lance Stroll, the owner's son, who first joined the team in 2019 when it operated under a different name. The Canadian has yet to claim a race victory in Formula One, and the pairing will now enter a fifth consecutive season together, making it one of the more stable lineups on the grid.

For Alonso, the partnership represents a stark contrast to earlier chapters of his career, which were frequently marked by short tenures and high-profile moves between teams. He won back-to-back titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006, then endured mixed spells at McLaren and Ferrari before returning to the sport with Alpine following a two-year hiatus.

Since linking up with Aston Martin in 2023, Alonso has collected eight podium finishes and two second-place results, highlights that came largely during an encouraging early run with the team. Those performances briefly raised hopes that Aston Martin could emerge as a genuine challenger at the sharp end of the field.

The current campaign, however, has proven far more difficult. An uncompetitive car combined with a Honda power unit has left the team struggling badly, with just three points from the opening 15 rounds — all of them scored by Alonso — leaving Aston Martin 10th in an 11-team constructors' standings.

That context makes the veteran's decision all the more notable, given that a driver of his pedigree could have sought a more competitive seat or a different form of racing altogether. Instead, he has chosen stability, betting that the team's long-term direction will eventually deliver the results its leadership has promised.

Alonso's longevity is itself remarkable in a sport increasingly focused on youth, with several teams opting for rookie drivers in recent seasons. By continuing past his 46th birthday, he will further extend a career that already ranks among the longest in Formula One history, and he remains a benchmark for fitness and adaptability.

His contract extension also provides Aston Martin with continuity at a time when technical regulations are set to shift, giving the team a known quantity in the cockpit while it works to close the performance gap to its rivals. Whether the car improves enough to match his ambitions, however, remains the central question hanging over the deal.

For now, Alonso appears content to answer that question from inside the team rather than from the sidelines. Having weighed retirement, alternative series and other roles, he has concluded that the thrill of competition still outweighs the frustrations of a difficult season — and that, at least for another year, Formula One is where he wants to be.
