Fact Check: Viral video of ship launch hailed as Kenya's Lake Victoria milestone actually shows vessel christening at Indian shipyard

A video that spread rapidly across social media this summer, purportedly showing the Kenyan government launching a new vessel called the MV Ngege on Lake Victoria, has been exposed as false. Fact-checkers determined the clip actually captures a ship launch at a shipyard in India, filmed months earlier, and that the vessel has no connection to Kenya whatsoever.

The claim gained traction after a Facebook post published on June 29, 2026 declared that the president had "officially launched" the MV Ngege into Lake Victoria, framing the supposed event as another milestone in efforts to revitalize affordable water transport. "Rais," the word used in the post, is Swahili for president and refers to William Ruto.

According to the post, the modern vessel was said to have been built by Kenya Shipyards Limited (KSL) under a government program for affordable water transport, an initiative supposedly designed to improve connectivity, support trade, assist fishing communities and ease pressure on roads around the lake region. The accompanying clip showed a cheering crowd as a large vessel slid into Africa's largest freshwater lake, which is bordered by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The fabricated narrative did not stay confined to a single post. The same video circulated elsewhere on Facebook and was boosted by at least four separate accounts on X, helping it reach a wider audience across the region.

The false story found fertile ground largely because Ruto has indeed been rolling out a string of development projects around Lake Victoria. During a trip to Siaya County on March 24, 2026, he announced a 9.5 billion shilling package — roughly $73.3 million — aimed at strengthening the blue economy along the lake.

That same day, Ruto presided over the groundbreaking of the Usenge Pier in Bondo constituency, a project worth 1 billion shillings, or about $7.7 million, being carried out by Kenya Shipyards Limited to improve water transport between Kisumu and Homa Bay counties. In a statement on his official Facebook page, the president described the broader investment as a way of creating jobs and improving livelihoods for residents of the lake region.

The package also included the already completed Homa Bay pier, a pier under construction at Muhuru Bay in Migori County, ten fish landing sites spread across five counties stretching from Busia to Migori, a 250 million shilling fishermen's rescue centre in Siaya valued at about $1.4 million, and 70 million shillings — roughly $540,000 each — earmarked for rescue boats and fish cages.

Crucially, however, none of these announcements mentioned any new ship launch. AFP's fact-checking team found no statement from the Kenyan government, the Kenya Ports Authority or Kenya Shipyards Limited announcing the commissioning of a vessel named MV Ngege, and a review of Kenyan media coverage turned up no reporting on such an event.

There was also a straightforward problem with the timeline. On June 29 — the very day the supposed Kisumu launch was said to have occurred — Ruto was in Nairobi commissioning the 3.8 billion shilling, 820-metre Ngong Road-Naivasha Road Flyover, a project worth approximately $29.3 million.

The decisive clue came from reverse image searches on keyframes extracted from the viral video, which led investigators to a longer clip uploaded by Chowgule Shipyards, an Indian shipbuilding and engineering firm belonging to the Chowgule Group. That original footage, posted on YouTube on April 30, 2026, documented the same vessel launch — confirming the scene unfolded at an Indian shipyard rather than on the shores of Lake Victoria.
