A family of five from Darlington, England, has swapped suburban life for a rented villa on a Thai island after selling nearly all of their possessions — including the home they once planned to live in forever.
Jasmine Scarr, 34, and her husband Ross Scarr, 38, made the move in May, departing the UK with their three children, two dogs and only five suitcases between them. Their children — Jayden, 7, Johnson, 5, and Mali, 2 — are now being educated at home in their new surroundings.
Before the relocation, the couple sold the property they had envisioned as their long-term family residence. According to People, the house was worth roughly $475,000.
The family now pays around $950 a month for a four-bedroom villa, utilities included. The home comes with its own swimming pool, a garden and a veranda that looks out over the jungle.
The decision was driven largely by work pressures. Ross, a welding engineer, used to work shifts roughly two hours from the family's house, and Jasmine says the demanding schedule left little room for time together and began taking a toll on his mental health.
Life now follows a very different rhythm centered on the children. Jasmine, who works in business payroll, handles her job duties remotely after her kids go to bed — a setup made possible because Thailand sits six hours ahead of the UK, freeing up her daylight hours for family life.
Education has also been reshaped. Jasmine pulled Jayden and Johnson out of their school back in March ahead of the move so she could homeschool them overseas. Each morning, after breakfast, the boys spend a minimum of two hours on lessons covering math, English and other subjects, while toddler Mali gets her own introduction to numbers and colors.
Learning extends beyond the classroom table. Family outings double as lessons, with trips to local temples sparking conversations about Thai culture. Both boys have signed up with a soccer team, and Jasmine hopes they will eventually pick up the Thai language as well.
Jasmine first fell for Thailand as a teenager and had long dreamed of going back. She admits that letting go of the family home and nearly everything they owned was daunting, but she believes it was the right call for her family.
For now, the couple has committed to at least a year abroad. Beyond that, nothing is set in stone — though Jasmine says they would love to stay in Thailand permanently and might one day launch a business there.
