Clearlake Capital Secures Full Ownership of Chelsea as Todd Boehly Departs and Xabi Alonso Backs New Vision

A defining chapter in the modern governance of Chelsea Football Club has concluded following the announcement that private equity firm Clearlake Capital has moved to take full operational control. The transition effectively ends the high-profile chairmanship of American investor Todd Boehly, bringing an end to the shared leadership arrangement that has overseen the London side over recent years.

Under the terms of the agreement confirmed by the Premier League outfit, Clearlake Capital—guided by co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano—is acquiring the equity held by Boehly alongside fellow board director Mark Walter. The buyout represents a major structural consolidation at Stamford Bridge, designed to streamline executive hierarchy and establish a singular strategic direction for the organization moving forward.

Boehly and Walter initially formed a joint syndicate alongside Clearlake to finalize a blockbuster purchase of Chelsea from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in May 2022. That transition unfolded following directives issued by the British government, ending Abramovich's long tenure and initiating a vast overhaul of the club's sporting and operational frameworks.

Prior to the buyout agreement, Clearlake held a commanding 61.5 percent majority stake in Chelsea. The remaining minority holdings were divided among Boehly, Walter, and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss. Following the latest corporate realignment, the club confirmed that Wyss will maintain his position as an important stakeholder and partner within the ongoing ownership consortium.

Beyond their ventures in English football, Boehly and Walter hold substantial footprints across global sports, notably including their co-ownership of Major League Baseball franchise the Los Angeles Dodgers. Walter also recently concluded the high-profile divestment of the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers basketball franchise in a landmark $12.5 billion transaction.

Financial figures reported by the Financial Times indicate that Boehly and Walter stand to receive approximately 950 million pounds, equivalent to $1.27 billion, for relinquishing their combined stakes. The comprehensive buyout values Chelsea at roughly five billion pounds when factoring in existing debt obligations, underscoring the substantial enterprise valuation attached to elite Premier League assets.

Following the confirmation of the transaction, Chelsea released a statement reiterating its organizational goals. The club affirmed that its overarching ambition remains focused on competing at the highest possible level, securing major silverware, and establishing a sustained model of competitive success across all competitions.

First-team manager Xabi Alonso, who officially assumed his managerial duties on July 1, publicly endorsed the transition ahead of his team's Premier League fixture against Brentford. Addressing members of the media, the Spanish tactician framed the structural resolution as an important milestone for the organization, expressing confidence that executive clarity will benefit the squad's development.

Alonso offered his gratitude to the departing figures for their dedication to the project, recognizing the fundamental role they played in acquiring and stabilizing the club during the 2022 transfer of power. While acknowledging their historical contribution, the former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager stressed the operational advantages that come with having an unambiguous leadership structure in place.

The manager emphasized his close working rapport with Eghbali, noting that the Clearlake co-founder was the principal figure who travelled to Madrid to present the vision for the club and successfully convince him to take the managerial post. Alonso expressed satisfaction that Eghbali is now exercising primary authority, noting that working under a direct line of communication will enhance internal synergy.

Reflecting on the club's trajectory, Alonso maintained that while building a dominant squad requires patience and incremental progress, the ultimate competitive standards remain uncompromising. He highlighted that everyone inside the dressing room understands the collective objectives and that the club's sporting ambition is distinctly defined as they move into this new era.

The ownership realignment comes after several seasons of mixed results on the domestic and international stages. Since the 2022 takeover, the Blues recorded their best Premier League campaign during the 2024/25 season by securing a fourth-place finish, a year in which the club also claimed both the UEFA Conference League trophy and the FIFA Club World Cup title.

However, momentum stalled in the subsequent domestic campaign, resulting in a disappointing 10th-place Premier League finish last season. Alonso was subsequently recruited to rejuvenate an underperforming squad, tasked with realigning sporting operations and returning the team to the pinnacle of domestic and European competition.

The current Premier League campaign has seen a steady if unspectacular opening phase for Alonso's side. Chelsea have collected seven points from their opening four league fixtures, positioning them in sixth place on the league table as the squad adapts to the manager's tactical principles and structural expectations.

The corporate restructuring also extends across Chelsea's broader multi-club network. Alongside their departure from Stamford Bridge, Boehly and Walter have also divested their ownership shares in French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, ceding full governance and ownership of the partner club to Clearlake Capital as part of the overarching settlement.
