Algeria Severs Diplomatic Relations With UAE Amid Escalating Geopolitical Rift

Algeria has officially severed diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates, marking the culmination of prolonged friction and escalating geopolitical disagreements between the two nations. The decisive move, announced on Thursday by Algerian state media, signals a major collapse in bilateral relations following years of mutual distrust over foreign policy alignments in North Africa and the wider region.

The Algerian Foreign Ministry justified the rupture by accusing Abu Dhabi of engaging in a series of “provocative and hostile acts.” While Algerian authorities did not immediately disclose specific incidents behind the move, the ministry stressed that the government had exhausted all viable channels to preserve formal dialogue, noting that prior warnings regarding the damaging consequences of the Gulf state's actions had gone unheeded.

In immediate response to the diplomatic breakdown, Algerian officials summoned UAE Ambassador Yousef Saif Khamis Subaa Al-Ali. The envoy was formally notified of the decision to cut ties and ordered to leave the country within a 48-hour deadline, underscoring the severity of the rift.

Alongside the diplomatic expulsion, Algeria announced aviation restrictions, stating that its sovereign airspace would be closed to all UAE-registered aircraft beginning Friday. The Algerian government instituted a partial grace period, permitting scheduled commercial flights between the UAE and Algiers to continue operating until the end of the year. The aviation measures follow moves initiated in February, when Algiers began unwinding a bilateral air services agreement dating back to 2013.

The Emirati administration responded with implicit pushback through senior diplomatic channels. Anwar Gargash, a high-ranking diplomatic adviser to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, posted a public critique urging that international diplomacy be guided by rationality, transparency, and effective communication rather than ambiguous signals and riddles.

While Gargash did not explicitly mention Algeria by name, his remarks pointedly addressed the situation, arguing that noise cannot compensate for a lack of strategic vision. He asserted that constructive diplomacy requires clear articulation of state interests and the sound management of disagreements, framing contrary approaches as managerial deficiencies.

Concurrently, the UAE Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing hope that the diplomatic rupture would prove to be merely temporary. The ministry emphasized its enduring appreciation for the Algerian population, highlighting the strong social ties connecting both nations, particularly through the Algerian expatriate community living in the UAE and traveling visitors.

The diplomatic collapse follows deep-seated ideological and strategic divisions across multiple regional files. A primary point of contention remains the normalization of relations with Israel. While the UAE formalized ties with Israel under the US-brokered Abraham Accords in 2020 and subsequently expanded bilateral economic and defense partnerships, Algeria maintains an unyielding stance against normalisation.

The two countries have also clashed sharply over the disputed territory of Western Sahara. Abu Dhabi openly supports Morocco’s sovereignty claims over the territory, whereas Algiers remains the primary international backer of the Polisario Front, which campaigns for full Western Saharan self-determination and independence.

Tensions have also been fueled by Algerian perceptions of Emirati interference across North Africa and the Sahel. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has repeatedly directed veiled critiques at a regional “statelet” or “micro-state,” widely understood by regional analysts to refer to the UAE, accusing it of orchestrating destabilization campaigns in neighboring conflict zones including Libya, Mali, and Sudan.

During a televised interview in July, President Tebboune voiced unusually stark warnings, asserting that the unnamed Gulf power left instability and bloodshed wherever it established a footprint. Tebboune stated that Algeria wished to insulate its own borders from such turmoil, disclosing that Algiers had previously held back on cutting formal ties solely to avoid worsening broader Arab and regional fractures.

The UAE has consistently rejected allegations of regional destabilization, yet the dispute with Algiers adds to a series of diplomatic crises involving Abu Dhabi and regional governments. In January, Somalia abrogated all military, security, and commercial maritime agreements with the UAE, asserting that Emirati actions and deepening ties with the breakaway region of Somaliland infringed upon Somali sovereignty and national unity.

Similarly, the military leadership in Sudan has repeatedly alleged that the UAE provides material and logistical support to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) amidst Sudan's ongoing civil war—an accusation the UAE firmly denies. In May, Sudanese authorities also linked the UAE to drone strikes allegedly orchestrated from neighboring Ethiopian territory.

The UAE's foreign policy has also caused strains within the Gulf Cooperation Council, notably with Saudi Arabia. Friction between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi intensified over conflicting agendas in Yemen, where Saudi forces conducted strikes in December against what they identified as UAE-linked arms shipments headed to the separatist Southern Transitional Council, alongside broader Saudi demands for Emirati military withdrawal.

The termination of diplomatic ties between Algiers and Abu Dhabi reflects the widening fractures reshaping Middle Eastern and North African diplomacy, cementing a complete freeze in official interactions between the two key Arab states for the foreseeable future.
