Algeria Cuts Diplomatic Ties With the United Arab Emirates Following Escalating Feud

The government of Algeria announced on Thursday that it has formally severed all diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, attributing the sweeping decision to an ongoing series of what it described as hostile and provocative actions orchestrated by Abu Dhabi. The decisive measure marks a complete breakdown in relations between the two Arab nations, following what Algerian officials characterized as a prolonged period of unresolved grievances and unheeded diplomatic warnings.

In an official communique released by Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, officials stated that the conduct of the Emirati government had escalated to an unacceptable degree, making the continuation of standard diplomatic ties completely untenable. The ministry stressed that authorities in Algiers had exhausted every conceivable diplomatic avenue to preserve functional bilateral relations, but persistent actions from Abu Dhabi left the Algerian leadership with no choice but to enact an immediate and total severance of ties.

As part of the formal termination of diplomatic engagements, the Algerian foreign ministry officially summoned the Emirati ambassador to receive notification of the government's decision. During the diplomatic meeting, Algerian authorities delivered an ultimatum giving the envoy a strict 48-hour window to conclude all official business and depart the country, effectively ending the UAE's accredited diplomatic representation in the Algerian capital.

In the immediate aftermath of the announcement, government officials and diplomatic representatives in the United Arab Emirates maintained silence, offering no immediate public comment or official response to Algeria's decision or the expulsion order delivered to their ambassador.

The rupture represents the culmination of years of escalating tension and ideological confrontation between Algiers and Abu Dhabi. Diplomatic ties between the two capitals have been subject to growing strain over an extended period, driven primarily by fundamentally conflicting geopolitical interests, competing regional agendas, and starkly opposing stances on several prominent conflicts across North Africa, the Middle East, and the Sahel corridor.

A prominent source of profound division between the two governments centers on the question of normalisation with Israel. Algeria has maintained an unyielding and vocal foreign policy stance firmly rejecting any diplomatic rapprochement or ties with Israel, remaining a staunch champion of the Palestinian cause. Conversely, the United Arab Emirates made a historic pivot in 2020 by signing the United States-brokered Abraham Accords, formally establishing diplomatic relations with Israel alongside Morocco, Algeria’s longstanding regional competitor.

The protracted dispute over Western Sahara has served as another critical catalyst for deteriorating bilateral relations. Algeria has long provided vital political, diplomatic, and logistical backing to the Polisario Front, an independence movement striving to establish a sovereign state in Western Sahara. In sharp contrast, the United Arab Emirates has aligned itself squarely with Rabat's territorial claims, actively affirming Morocco’s claim of sovereignty over the contested territory by opening a diplomatic consulate within Western Sahara itself.

Regional dynamics in the vast Sahel region south of the Sahara have created yet another arena of friction and intersecting strategic interests between the two nations. In recent years, Abu Dhabi has aggressively expanded its economic, diplomatic, and security engagements with numerous governments across the Sahel belt, steadily increasing its footprint and geopolitical sway in an area that Algeria has traditionally regarded as vital to its immediate sphere of influence.

This expanding Emirati presence in the Sahel has coincided with a turbulent period for Algerian diplomacy in the sub-Saharan region. Following a series of military coups that upended civilian governments among Algeria's southern neighbors, relations between Algiers and several adjacent Sahelian administrations have grown increasingly strained, complicating Algeria’s regional security framework and heightening sensitivities regarding external Gulf involvement.

The formal decision to terminate relations follows months of increasingly harsh rhetoric directed at the Gulf federation by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. In various official speeches, the Algerian head of state has publicly referred to the UAE using disparaging terms, describing the country as a "micro-state" or "statelet" that actively seeks to foment instability and disruption across multiple nations throughout the broader region.

President Tebboune delivered his most forceful critique during a widely viewed televised interview broadcast in July, directly addressing the negative repercussions of Emirati foreign policy initiatives. In that address, the Algerian president openly characterized Abu Dhabi's regional influence as deeply damaging, explicitly asserting that "wherever they set foot, blood flows," while rebuking what he described as a very negative impact on regional stability.

During the same televised address, President Tebboune articulated his administration's firm desire to keep Emirati influence well away from Algerian borders and national affairs. He emphasized that the primary imperative behind his government’s confrontational posture was to ensure that the Gulf nation remained at a distance, stating directly: "We want them to stay away, so that blood does not flow in our country."

President Tebboune also revealed in the July interview that the prospect of severing diplomatic ties with the UAE was not a sudden impulse, but rather an outcome that had been contemplated for an extensive period. He noted at the time that a complete diplomatic rupture "would have happened long ago" had Algeria not deliberately held back in order to prevent deepening divisions and polarization within the wider Arab world.

By executing the formal break on Thursday and ordering the immediate departure of the Emirati diplomatic mission, Algeria has demonstrated that its tolerance for Abu Dhabi's policies has reached an absolute end. The collapse of bilateral ties formally cements a profound geopolitical divide between North Africa’s largest nation and one of the Gulf’s most influential states, signaling an enduring period of diplomatic estrangement.
